Common Zoom Audio Problems & How to Fix Them | IR

For wired mics, try plugging it into a different USB port. For Bluetooth devices, make sure you have a fully charged battery. Zoom usually requests access to your mic before you join a meeting, but in case you missed it, you can select Join Audio at the bottom of the Zoom window. If the microphone icon has a line through it in your Zoom window, select the Sound icon to unmute yourself. During a meeting, select the up arrow next to the Microphone icon and make sure the desired mic is active.

If you think the meeting host has inadvertently muted you, send them a message in chat and ask to be unmuted. Ensure you correctly set up your mic in Windows and select the audio input you prefer on Mac. The reason why rebooting resolves computer problems is that it closes any processes that might be interfering with hardware or software.

If you hear an echo, your microphone may be picking up the audio from another source, such as a TV or an external speaker. To avoid hearing an echo in Zoom, everyone should mute their mic when not speaking. Meeting organizers can mute everyone else in the meeting. Zoom offers advanced tools intended to improve audio playback, but they can sometimes have the opposite effect.

If you have ongoing audio problems with your mic, open Zoom while not in a meeting and select the Settings gear , then choose the Audio tab and select Advanced to change these options. Make sure you're using the latest version of Zoom: There have been a number of Zoom updates recently, the latest version at the time of writing is Zoom 5.

You'll usually be prompted to update when you open Zoom if there's an update, but it's always worth checking, as some features change between updates. My app keeps crashing or closing: First of all, do both of the things above. If you're still having problems, try restarting your computer. If that doesn't solve it, check if there are any software updates for your computer.

Zoom says my connection is unstable: Unfortunatly this happens from time to time. This is a local connection problem so the first thing is to check your Wi-Fi connection or wired connection. It's worth running a speed test - just Google speed test and you'll get the option to run a quick test where you can see if there really is a speed problem.

If you're using Wi-Fi, see if you can plug into a wired connection instead, as it's likely to be more stable than Wi-Fi, or move closer to your router. This is definitely worth doing if you always have a connection problem on Zoom. If it's a one-off problem, there's likely nothing you can do about it except wait for the problem to pass - you could try stopping all other activity on your connection to let Zoom have all the bandwidth available.

Check you're not muted: When you join a Zoom meeting you'll normally have to click to activate the microphone, because you're muted. Look for the microphone icon in the bottom left hand corner, if it's crossed out, click it to unmute your microphone. If you're on the mobile app, you'll have to "join with audio" to be able to speak or hear sound. If using an external microphone: Many external mics have they own mute feature - make sure the mic itself isn't muted.

Check your Bluetooth connection: If you join a call and no one can hear you, check you're not connected to a Bluetooth headset elsewhere in the house.

It might be that an existing connection has claimed your audio. Or, if you want to use a Bluetooth headset, make sure it's properly connected to the device running Zoom. Check the audio source in Zoom: If you're in a call and no one can hear you, you can click on the up arrow to expand the audio button in the Zoom app.

You'll then see the options available on your computer so you can use the correct microphone. Check the audio settings in Zoom: Similar to above, if you're not in a meeting you can open Zoom, open the settings and head to "audio".

You may not have allowed Zoom to access your microphone. If none of the above solutions fix your problem, you can try rebooting your computer or phone and reopening the app. Otherwise, you may have broken headphones. Make sure you test your headphones using other recording or playback apps to see if the headphones are the problem. By Cianna Garrison.
